I would like the group leave unmoderated, to be practic (although, we
need a moderator), but
I think the major part of the spam comes from one user: tanu sharma
If we (or the new moderator) "kick" that user, a big part of the
problem will be fixed.

IMHO.

Greetings from Mexico.

Our interest lies in protecting this list from spammers. We have no
interest in moderating as a means of controlling or censoring content
from valid members. Until we have someone with moderator abilities we
cannot purge the list of spammers. No one has sought moderator status
for any purpose beyond that. Rest assured.

I agree.
I'm sorry for being a bit late here, but my PSU in my mail PC blew up,
and I haven't had time to replace it yet.
As soon I get it running, I'll mail Yahoo with the results.

Hi all.

I finally got my PC restored, and wrote Yahoo,
and asked them to give me and Lynn moderator status,
as we had discussed here in this group, and they have
done that now :-)

Here is the (last) msg from Yahoo just FYI:

--------------
Hello Allan,

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Groups.

We appreciate your patience during this process of electing a new
moderator for the Yahoo! Group, "osFree".

I have verified the results of the moderator poll, and, per your
request, have promoted both you and Lynn to moderator.

Allan, please contact us again if you have any further questions or
concerns.

Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Groups Customer Care.

Regards,

Gidget

Done.
Then I just spend a couple of hours cleaning all spam out of
the group (more than 500 msgs) and banned all the authors.
(We "lost" around 160 members ;-) )

Now, which approach should we take against future spam ?
Right now, the group is open for anyone to join and post spam.

There are 2 ways to stop it:

Moderate Joining the group or moderate Posting from new members.

The first will make new members have to wait to post anything,
until Lynn or I approves them.

The second will make new members post stay in wait position,
until Lynn or I approves it. When we think member/post is ok,
we can remove this restriction from the new member.

Non of these restrictions will hit any of the current members.

What do you (all!) think, is the best approach ?

I think that the 2nd is the better approach, since that way you guys get
some idea of what types of posts the new members will be making. If the
very first post they make is good, then no problems. It will require a
little bit more work on your parts though (since you'll actually have to
read first posts as opposed to just approving new memberships).

From other lists which I moderate I prefer to control it at the
subscribe level on notification from Yahoo.
